7 Classic Cocktail Recipes You Should Learn During This Lockdown

With the recent outbreak of coronavirus, most people are under a mandatory stay-at-home situation. And suddenly people with non-essential jobs have a lot of free time.

If you’re one of them, chances that you’re getting bored and looking for something interesting to do. So, why not learn how to make cocktails at home?

Making cocktails at home can be extremely fun, especially when you’re an alcohol fan. As you have nothing much to do, it’s the perfect time to learn about making cocktails so that you can surprise everyone when this lockdown is over.

This article looks into some of the famous classical cocktails recipes.

Recipes of Classical Cocktails

1. Margarita

Ingredients:

  • Kosher salt (for serving)
  • ½ thick lime wheel (for serving)
  • 2 oz. Tequila Blanco
  • ¾ oz. fresh lime juice
  • ¾ oz. simple syrup

How to prepare:

  • Take a small plate and place some salt on it. Rub the rim of a rocks glass with lime and reserve for serving, dip in salt.
  • Fill with ice and set aside.
  • Mix tequila, simple syrup, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with the ice.
  • Cover and vigorously shake until outside of the shaker is very cold, about 20 seconds.
  • Strain the cocktail through a slotted spoon into the reserved glass.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel.

2. Classic Whiskey Smash

Ingredients:

  • Seven fresh mint leaves
  • One lemon half
  • 1 tbsp simple syrup (click for recipe)
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • Crushed ice

How to prepare:

  • Mash 7 fresh mint leaves, one lemon half, quartered lengthwise, and 1 Tbsp. simple syrup (click for recipe) in a 16-oz. mixing glass using a muddler 4–5 times just to release juices and oils.
  • Add 1/4 cup bourbon and transfer to an Old Fashioned glass.
  • Fill halfway with crushed ice. Stir and mound more crushed ice on top.
  • Garnish with mint sprigs.

3. Daiquiri

Ingredients:

  • 1 bar spoon (or one tsp) of superfine sugar
  • 1¾ ounces of white rum
  • ¾ ounce of fresh lime juice
  • ½ ounce of simple syrup
  • One lime

How to prepare:

  • Mix rum, sugar, lime juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker.
  • Then, stir until the sugar dissolves. Fill shaker with ice. Cover and vigorously shake it until the outside is very cold. Place a large ice cube in the coupe glass. Strain the cocktail through a Hawthorne strainer the glass.
  • Using a small knife, remove a 1″ strip of peel from the lime. Twist over the drink to express oils; discard. Garnish with a lime twist.

4. Mojito

Ingredients:

  • ¾ ounce simple syrup
  • Two sprigs mint, plus some more for serving
  • 2 ounces of white rum
  • ¾ ounce fresh lime juice
  • Club soda (for serving)

How to Prepare:

  • Muddle simple syrup and two mint sprigs in a cocktail shaker. Add rum and lime juice. Fill shaker with ice. Cover and shake it vigorously until the outside is very cold.
  • Strain cocktail through a slotted spoon into a tall Collins glass filled with ice. Top off with some club soda. Garnish with more mint.

5. Cosmopolitan

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 1-ounce cranberry juice cocktail
  • ¾ ounce fresh lime juice
  • ¾ ounce triple sec
  • Orange twist (for serving)

How to prepare:

  • Combine vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice, and triple sec in a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice. Cover and shake it vigorously for about 20 seconds.
  • Strain the mixture through a Hawthorne strainer into a martini glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

6. Pour Over Irish Coffee

Ingredients:

  • One small sugar cube
  • 6 ounces of hot freshly brewed coffee
  • 2 ounces of GrandTen Distilling South Boston Irish whiskey
  • Whipped cream (for serving)
  • A few dashes of Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters (optional; for serving)

How to prepare:

  • Take an Irish coffee mug and place sugarcube in it. Add whiskey and coffee and stir to combine. Top with bitters and whipped cream.

7. Gin and Tonic

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces gin (preferably Tanqueray)
  • 1–3 lime wedges
  • 3–4 ounces tonic water

How to prepare:

  • Take a highball glass filled with ice and add Gin to it. Squeeze in lime wedges to taste, then add them to glass. Add tonic water; stir to combine.

Conclusion

You don’t need lots of ingredients to make a refreshing cocktail. With just a few ingredients and some simple techniques, you can make a drink that will be a party-crasher.
