Healthy Foods for Irregular Periods

The period is a natural part of a woman’s monthly cycle. It’s a process in which blood, along with tissues, comes out of the uterus through the vagina.

Although most women bleed for two to seven days, the number of days can vary from person to person. The time gap from one period to another is known as a period cycle that can be anywhere around 26-32 days.

However, if you find the cycles are often delayed by more than seven days, chances that you’re suffering from an irregular period. Also known as oligomenorrhea, it’s a common problem among women today.

Occasional fluctuation isn’t a cause for concern, but if you continuously have an irregular period, it can be life-threatening to you. However, there’s nothing to worry about as you can regulate your period by bringing some changes into your regular diet.

This article looks into some healthy foods that can be helpful for your irregular periods.

Healthy Foods for Irregular Periods

1. Ginger

Ginger is extremely beneficial for your health. Starting from the common cold to digestion, this herb can treat several ailments.

If your period is delayed, ginger can help you regulate your bleeding. A 2012 research shows that ginger extract could help with irregular periods and reduce the cramps.

It’s because ginger is rich in vitamin C and magnesium, which can help your uterus to contract and start your menstrual.

2. Unripe Papaya

Adding unripe papaya to your diet can help you regulate your period. Like ginger, it also helps to release the blood and tissue from the vagina by contracting the muscles in the uterus.

However, it’s highly recommended that you don’t eat papaya during the period and while you’re pregnant. Several studies conclude that it’s quite unsafe to consume this fruit during pregnancy.

3. Cinnamon

Instead of just enhancing the taste of your cooking, cinnamon can give your body a warming effect, which helps regulate your menstrual cycle.

It can also help regulate the insulin levels in your body that can have positive effects on other hormones and periods.

Those who are suffering from PCOS often have high insulin levels and irregular periods. Consuming cinnamon can help regulate the cycle. It can also soothe painful period cramps.

You can mix cinnamon powder with any of your food recipes or can take 500 mg of supplements daily.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric has shown to have numerous health benefits, thanks to curcumin, its key component.

Consuming turmeric has a positive effect on the estrogen level, which may eventually regulate your period. Besides, it contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce severe pain during menstrual.

To get the best result, mix it with warm milk and drink every night.

5. Pineapple

This delicious fruit is a popular remedy for an irregular period. It contains bromelain, an enzyme, which helps to shed the lining of the uterus that starts your period.

Besides, pineapple can improve the production of white and red blood cells, helping in blood flow.

However, do not consume pineapple if you’re pregnant, as it may lead to a miscarriage.

When To See The Doctor

An irregular period is quite reasonable and can be treated with some dietary changes. However, consistent irregularity in your menstrual cycle can be a sign of underlying health conditions.

Consult a doctor if you see the following symptoms:

  • You haven’t had a period for the last three months
  • You’re having period more than once every 21 days
  • You’re having period less than once every 35 days
  • The periods last for more than seven days at a time
  • You need one or more menstrual products an hour
  • The blood clots you’re passing are the size of or larger than a quarter

Bottom Line

The period is an inevitable part of every woman’s life until they reach menopause. It will make it harder to get pregnant if you suffer from irregular periods.

Also, having irregular periods means you’re suffering from some other medical conditions that might be life-threatening for you. That’s why you should make sure your menstrual cycle is regular.

Try to bring a healthy change in your diet. If you don’t see any difference, discuss it with a doctor and start your treatment.
