Vaginal itching can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing.

Oil extracted from this herb is one of the ingredients in a topical formula used for chronic vaginal itching [2].

In a clinical trial that tested the efficacy of this product, 96 female subjects with vaginal itching were first treated with a topical steroid, after which they were given either the tea tree oil based formulation or a placebo for 60 days [2].

Results show that 85 percent of the participants who used the product experienced marked reduction not only in vaginal itching but also in inflammation [2].

By using this natural product, women can avoid prolonged application of topical steroids, which have been linked to harmful side effects [2].

Other studies have also been conducted to evaluate and prove chamomile oil’s potent anti-microbial and antibacterial properties [3, 4, 5].

  • 4 to 5 drops of tea tree oil

2. Neem (Indian Lilac)

In India, neem is called the “wonder tree” due to its numerous medicinal purposes, which include boosting the immune system, delaying aging process, promoting hair and scalp health, speeding up wound healing, and alleviating inflammation [6].

This herb has also been found to be highly effective in controlling fungal infections [6].

A 2006 study revealed that neem resisted the formation and adherence of Candida albicans [7, 8].

It also suppressed the fungi’s cell surface hydrophobicity, which also helped in fighting the problem [7].

These and its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties make it a suitable remedy for vaginal itching.

  • 3 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of neem leaves
  • 3 drops of neem oil

  • In a pot, boil neem leaves in three cups of water.

  • Add neem oil to a cup of water.

3. Coconut Oil

There’s a growing problem of antimicrobial resistance today.

The fact that there are only few antifungal products that have strong fungicidal effects that can control Candida species from infecting humans adds to the problem.

It’s good to know that there are natural antifungals such as coconut oil that works even on drug-resistant Candida.

In a 2009 study, it was reported that coconut oil and fluconazole were tested against 52 Candida isolates derived from the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria [9].

Using agar-well diffusion method, researchers exposed various Candida strains to coconut oil and antifungal medication fluconazole [9].

As it turns out, coconut oil depleted 100 percent of the Candida species with a minimum concentration of 25 percent [9].

4. Garlic

Historical records show that garlic has been used as an herbal remedy for the last 5,000 years [11].

It is not just a spice that adds flavor and aroma to dishes, but also a potent fighter of harmful microorganisms.

Several studies verify garlic’s broad-spectrum of anti-microbial properties against many types of fungi and bacteria [12, 13, 14].

In a 2008 study conducted in India, it was proved that allicin, the active antibacterial compound in garlic did wonders in treating vaginal infection that cause itching [15].

Treatment with this compound helped in resolving the issue by reducing the pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as the number of reactive oxygen species [15].

5. Boric Acid

According to WebMD, boric acid is a “white, crystalline chemical substance that has antifungal and antiviral properties” commonly used for treating vaginal yeast infections.

The efficacy of boric acid therapy for vaginal infections has been established in numerous studies [16, 17, 18, 19].

In one study performed in 2003, a regimen consisting of 600 mg of boric acid was used by 74 women with fungal vaginitis for two to three weeks [16].

Researchers conclude that boric acid is a useful treatment for women with this type of infection [16].

In another experiment, 58 women with recurrent bacterial vaginosis were treated with oral nitroimidazole for seven days, and then intravaginal boric acid for 21 days [20].

The cure rate for the combination of nitroimidazole and boric acid was 88 to 92 percent [20].

7. Honey

Candida infections, which are becoming more prevalent worldwide due to the increase of drug resistance, can be combated safely with honey [25].

A 2015 comparative study found that honey was just as effective as clotrimazole in fighting Candida albicans, which is the most common cause of Vulvovaginitis Candidiasis [26].

It was stated in the results that the different concentrations of clotrimazole and honey worked in inhibiting the growth and spread of these fungal strains [26].

Another study conducted in 2010 released similar findings, reporting that honey can effectively treat vaginal yeast infection without altering the vaginal flora [27].

This outcome was reached after Candida albicans were exposed to different concentrations of honey ranging from 20 percent to 95 percent [27].

Lowest growth rate of the fungus was observed in 80 percent concentration of honey [27].

Apple cider vinegar is considered by many experts as a cheap and quick way to relieve vaginal itching and infection.
